Tony Horsfall from Parish Pump Website considers the challenge of change Time for a change I have had my walking boots for a few years now, and they have been faithful companions. We have walked many miles together during that time, on my daily walks as well as on holiday. They are partly responsible for my physical recovery after Covid-19, so they have a place in my heart. They fit me very well, and we have adjusted to one another. But they are very thin now on the soles and heels, and it is reluctantly time for a change. So, one recent Saturday I bought a new pair. They are clean and smart, and fully waterproof. The soles are strong and new. There are no signs of wear and tear. But I know that change is never easy. They will take some time to wear in. They may rub and I may get a blister or two. Occasionally I will long for my old boots, and wonder, ‘Did I make a mistake?’ Hopefully, they will become as much a part of me as my old ones as we tread the miles together. But there is always a risk with something new, Isn’t there? Change is never easy in whatever form it comes. But change is inevitable because life does not stand still, and we have to keep adjusting and adapting and being open to fresh winds of the Spirit. Never more so than in these present, troublesome days. Strangely enough as I have been meditating on this, my reading this morning (Isaiah 9) contained a reference to ‘Every warrior’s boot used in battle … will be destined for burning (v5).’ Oh dear. I’m sure like me, warriors were fond of their boots too and found it hard to part with them. 5

MARY’S on a Thursday, 10am - 11am There is also a service of Holy Communion We ask, when entering the church, to wear face covering if possible and to follow the guide lines once inside. Celebrating 200 Years with St Marys It is hard to believe but 200 years ago a small chapel was opened on the site of St Marys Church to serve the tiny hamlet of Fishponds. It was at that point part of the large Parish Church of Stapleton. It was called the Trinity Chapel (1821). Fishponds continued to grow around the small chapel and the church yard and this small chapel was then extended and added to and became St Marys in 1869. So this year in 2021 we celebrate the Bi Centennial of St Marys (Trinity Chapel) It has been a place of Christian worship in Fishponds, one that has seen baptisms, festivals, harvests, weddings and burials for 200 years. This is a place that speaks of both our deep connections to people of the past, but also is a chance to celebrate with this community today and to look forward to what might be the future of this church in Fishponds. On the weekend of Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of September 2021 we will have a programme of an exhibition, tours, music, recitals, cream teas, colouring competitions and worship. We would love you to join us, celebrate with us. Save the date in your diaries. 8

If you have any old photographs of St Marys then we would love to see them and scan them so they could form part of our exhibition. Please contact Mary Ewing or speak with Lizzie Kesteven so we can let you know how to join in in this way. MAKE LUNCH SUMMER CAFÉ at ALL SAINTS We are planning an exciting initiative at All Saints, Fishponds this year. We will be setting up a Summer Café in our Halls during the school holidays. The aim is to provide a substantial meal for families during the summer break. To take place every Tuesday and Thursday on these dates:July 27th, 29th, August 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, 24th, 26th. Each session will run from 3.00am - 7.00pm. Our target group is pupils on Free School meals in the local community, including students at Chester Park, Fishponds Academy and Bristol Met. The age range is 5-16 years plus siblings, parents and carers. We have a catering officer who will coordinate the supply and preparation of the meals. We want to provide a welcoming atmosphere, with some children’s activities such as games and crafts, and the chance for adults to relax. 9

There will be no charge for any of the sessions, thanks to generous grants from the Bristol Diocese and Bristol City Council Community Funds. We are looking for volunteers to help at these sessions. Skills needed are : Setting up and clearing away, welcoming, assisting in preparation of meals, organising children’s activities and games. Volunteers can opt for any of the sessions listed. If you can help out with a couple or more sessions, you would be welcomed. There is no requirement to attend every session. We will organise the usual DBS safety checks for all volunteers. If you are able to help in any way, please get in touch. Ivy on your house is not really so bad after all So says the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). In an effort to restore the plant’s reputation, the RHS has been showcasing the species at its flagship garden in Wisley, Surrey. It hopes to set a new trend, and to get people to stop seeing ivy as ‘the enemy.’ At Wisley you can now see 390 varieties of ivy, with a vast array of leaf shapes, sizes and colours. The RHS EASY wants people to see that ivy can be an attractive and even eco-friendly addition to your home. RHS experts say that ivy is a ‘super plant’ that not only has insulating benefits, but also offers habitats for a variety of wildlife, as well as being a food source for birds and pollinators during months of the year when there is very little else for them to eat. HOW CLIMATE CHANGE COULD AFFECT YOUR CUP OF TEA! Now here’s something that will send you straight to your kitchen to put the kettle on: the Great British cup of tea may not taste quite so good in the future. It seems that extreme weather and rising temperatures could lead to inferior leaves in the future, according to Christian Aid. Kenya, the world’s foremost exporter of black tea, is now affected by erratic rainfall, floods, droughts, and rising temperatures. India, Sri Lanka and China, also major tea producers, face climate change problems as well. Climate change has been predicted by some as likely to cut production in Kenya’s best tea-making areas by as much as a quarter by 2050. Even areas of only average growing conditions could see production fall by 39 per cent. As one tea farmer in Kenya’s Western Highlands, explained: “We cannot predict seasons anymore. Temperatures are rising, rainfall is erratic, often accompanied by unusual hailstones and longer droughts. If this continues, it will make growing tea much harder.” MONTHLY COFFEE MORNING IS BACK!! Please join us on Saturday 3rd July from 10am to 12noon. We will be putting into place social distancing and ask that when you come into the Church to wear face covering until seated. There will be some seating outside if the weather permits it. Also you are very welcome to bring along your own reusable container for your drinks. Please pop in and pay us a visit, even for 10mins. Looking forward to seeing you. 22

WORD SEARCH Doubting Thomas If you have ever doubted aspects of your Christian faith, St Thomas is the saint for you. His feast day is on 3rd July. Thomas, one of Jesus’ 12 disciples, was deeply devoted, but also very honest whenever he got confused. When Jesus spoke of going to his Father (John 14), Thomas was not afraid to ask Him where His Father was. As for the Resurrection, that really baffled Thomas. He demanded to see the risen Jesus for himself - and touch the wounds in His hands and feet. When Jesus appeared, Thomas’ immediate response was one of worship: “My Lord and my God” (John 20). Thus, Doubting Thomas’ honest doubts, turned to honest faith, have become a reassurance for thousands of us down the centuries who also sometimes doubt Jesus. In Doubting Thomas’ complete affirmation of faith, after meeting the risen, crucified Christ, we can find support for our own faith in Him.
