Canon Paul Hardingham from Parish Pump considers where Jesus is now. The Ascension This month at Ascension Day, we remember Jesus ascending to ‘God’s right hand’ (1 Peter 3:22). It’s a somewhat neglected Christian festival, taking place on a Thursday, 40 days after Easter. However, this phrase is used in three different contexts in the New Testament. Sitting at God’s right hand Jesus occupies a position of power and authority at the centre of the universe, ‘exalted to the right hand of God’ (Acts 2:33). This position was secured by His death and resurrection, enabling us to experience the life of heaven, including eternal life, forgiveness, healing and the power to transform lives and communities. Is this our expectation and experience? Standing at God’s right hand Our experience of heaven is only partial because of the presence of suffering and disappointment in our lives. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, saw Jesus ‘standing at the right hand of God’ (Acts 7:56), when being stoned to death. Do we see that Jesus is on the throne and has a purpose for our lives, even when we are going through setbacks and difficulties? As a result of Stephen’s death, the church grew and the apostle Paul was impacted. Where do we see the fruit of the suffering in our lives? Praying at God’s right hand Finally, we are told that Jesus is ‘interceding for us’ at God’s right hand (Romans 8:34 & Hebrews 7:25). Jesus is on our side at the heart of the universe and fully knows our needs when praying for us. He is for us, even when we feel defeated by the wrong things in our lives. How does this help us now? So where has Jesus gone? Because He is in heaven, the Ascension opens up the possibility that we can experience the life of heaven, both now and in eternity. 5

MAY PRAYER PAGE ✤ We pray that Christ’s Resurrection blessing will be with us all in this Easter season. ✤ We pray for all areas of conflict in the world. We pray for all those whose family members have been killed in the Ukraine war, who have been displaced by that war or wounded or had their lives broken. Help those across the world to offer real assistance and healing hands. ✤ We pray for the All Saints Family Café, serving our community and serving food to that community, to those who really need it. Help us to serve people’s bodies and souls. ✤ We pray for the Fishponds C of E Academy as it searches for a new Head, and we thank you for that school in this place. ✤ We pray for all who work so hard to support others to be maximally independent in their own homes, or in care homes. Bless all the home care staff who work here in Fishponds, who often minister to the lonely, isolated and forgotten. ✤ Keep us safe from Covid, and help us to keep ourselves protected and to help each other. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Prayer for May by Daphne Kitching Dear Father in Heaven, As we thank you for May, this most beautiful of months, we are aware that not everything in your world is beautiful; not every attitude or action is beautiful, or kind, or just. There is so much pain and suffering in the world that we can sometimes feel overwhelmed. Help us, Lord to remember that Jesus came to bring all this brokenness together, to bring reconciliation and wholeness. Thank you that by His life, death and resurrection Jesus overcame death for ever. Thank you that He ascended into heaven so that the Holy Spirit could come to live in believers, to give strength and power and resilience, so that Your work goes on. Thank you that nothing in all creation – no evil attacks, no illness, no human powers, no circumstances at all – can ever separate us from Your love. We will not be overwhelmed as we keep our eyes on You. We may not always understand, but we acknowledge You to be the Lord, who reigns over all – and we are thankful. In Jesus name. Amen. 7

Reflected Faith Series: The Meaning of Colours – part 1 In March, April and May this year the coloured frontal of the altar will have been changed many times – as will the colour of the priest’s vestments. Each colour – and there can be as many as six in a church’s store – has a different meaning. They reflect the significance of that day or the season. In March purple was used as a symbol of penitence, as we were in Lent and trying to prepare ourselves for Christ’s final act of love for each of us. Holy Week – the time of Christ’s final journey – was denoted by the colour red. Red, the colour of blood, is used for feasts of martyrs as well as those for the Holy Spirit – when it more likely represents his flames of ‘fire’ which rested on those in the Upper Room. Maundy Thursday, we switched to white for any Communion service, as this celebrates the remembrance of the first Communion with His apostles which He commanded us to continue. Good Friday, and we were back to red. Then on Easter Sunday, the day of the greatest Christian Celebration, we entered to an altar bedecked in gold or the ‘whitest’ with the most elaborate decoration the church possesses. ‘Plain’ White will be used for the Easter Season signifying purity and Christ’s triumph over death until Ascension Day on 26th May. This, being a special and more significant day in the life, death and resurrection of Christ, goes to gold again: then immediately back to white for the next ten days. On the day of Pentecost itself, Whit Sunday, 5th June, the colour will be? Yes, you got it, red for flames of fire. 9

Out and about on the roads? Remember the NEW Highway Code When did you last read the Highway Code? Various ‘fundamental’ changes were recently made which will surely affect you. For example, there is a new hierarchy of road users, where drivers now have new responsibilities to watch out for people who are walking, cycling, or riding a horse. Another example is that cyclists are now advised to cycle in the centre of lanes in slower-moving traffic. Finally, do you even know how best to open your car door? According to the Highway Code, you should use your hand on the opposite side to the door you are opening; for example, use your left hand to open a door on your right-hand side. This will make you turn your head to look over your shoulder. You are then more likely to avoid causing injury to cyclists or motorcyclists passing you on the road, or to people on the pavement. Read all about the new rules at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code All Saints Monthly COFFEE MORNING Saturday 2nd May 10am - 12noon All Saints Church, Grove Road Second hand fiction books for adults and children to buy. THE DASH by Linda Ellis I read of a man who stood to speak At the funeral of a friend He referred to the dates on the tombstones From the beginning … to the end. He noted that the first came the date of birth And spoke the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time That they spent alive on earth And now only those who loved them Know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, The cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love And how we spend our dash. So, think about this long and hard, Are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left That can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough To consider what’s true and real And always try to understand The way other people feel. And be less quick to anger And to show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect And more often wear a smile Remembering this special dash Might only last a little while So, when your eulogy is being read With your life’s actions to rehash… Would you be proud of the things they say About how you spent YOUR dash? 17 COFFEE MORNING Saturday 14th May From 10am until 12noon All welcome to pop into St. Marys Church to help support Christian Aid while having a cuppa! HOPE TO SEE YOU Talking about supporting WELL DONE to the Marie Curie Cancer Nurses Event This took place last month. It was a joyous morning which began with a beautiful introduction from Revd Lizzie which set the scene. There was a short time of reflection and a chance to light a candle in memory of loved ones. This was followed by refreshments and a table top sale. £203 was raised which has now been sent to Marie Curie. Big thanks to Kate, Maggie and helpers from the ‘Living with Loss’ group and to everyone who supported this charity.

Christian Basics No 5: Understanding the Bible (Paul Hardingham continues this year-long series on the very foundations of our Christian faith.) (Material taken from Parish Pump, web site for Church Magazines) The Bible is a popular book, with five billion copies sold worldwide every year, as well as a uniquely precious book. At her coronation the Queen was given a Bible, ‘the most precious thing this world affords’. The Bible isn’t simply one book, but a library of 66 books, composed by some 44 writers over a period of 1500 years in a range of styles including history, poetry, prophecy, letters and apocalyptic (looking at the end times). Despite having a number of different writers, the Bible claims one author – God Himself! As the Word of God, it is the primary way by which God speaks to us. ‘All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work’ (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible is inspired (‘the word of God in the words of men’) and is a manual for life, equipping us to live for God in every aspect of our lives. We also have the promise of the Holy Spirit, who helps us to apply its words to our lives: ‘But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth’ John 16:13. The Bible can also be described as a love letter from God, as it deepens our relationship with Him. Jesus said: ‘You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life’ (John 5:39,40). Christians follow a person not a book, and the Scriptures are intended to help us to know Jesus better. Like a signpost, the Bible points us to the person of Jesus. SMILES LINES Church members were discussing the vicar’s and the curate’s sermons. The church warden said: “The vicar, now, when she says ‘in conclusion’, she concludes. But the curate, when he says ‘lastly’ – my! How he do last!” 18

Packed lunches are back in style With food prices soaring, who needs a bought sandwich or salad? They can cost nearly £8 a day from LEON or Pret or other food outlets. Instead, it seems we are investing in plastic food containers (John Lewis reports sales are up 64 per cent on last year) and taking our own lunches to work. As one cookery blogger explains, “You can’t reduce your council tax, but you can make little savings on everyday meals, which add up to a significant difference.” “It’s ‘cool’ these days to take a packed lunch to the office,” says Suzanne Mulholland, author of The Batch Lady: Shop Once. Cook Once. Eat Well All Week. “Being organised and prepared is seen as a good thing.” As for coffee, consider this: buying a £3 cappuccino every day adds up to £1,095 a year. Far cheaper to fill a flask at home. Meet on the 2nd Sunday of the Month 7.15pm For young people from year 7 upwards, to meet, talk, learn, pray and have fun together. Contact Revd. Celtic Prayer – Caught Up in Love Edited by David Cole (Brother Cassian), BRF, £12.99 This rich collection of essays, conversations and reflections from 30 members of the Community of Aidan and Hilda distils the ancient wisdom of the Celtic Christians and applies it to the lived reality of contemporary readers. It can be helpful for anyone drawn to explore teachings about prayer from a Celtic perspective. It offers deep spiritual truths woven beautifully with usable prayers, ‘like a piece of Celtic knotwork flowing around the page of an illuminated scripture.’As David Cole writes in his introduction: “Celtic Christian spirituality is about embodying the Divine in every aspect of your life, and prayer is a significant part of that.” Take a walk on the wild side! How neat do we like our gardens to be? Full of manicured lawns, with immaculate flower beds? Well, yes and no. A recent survey by BBC’s Gardener’s World magazine has found that more than half (54 per cent) of gardeners now include ‘uncultivated areas’ in their garden. And some 44 per cent of gardeners have also set up a wildflower area. Certainly, Nature could use a helping hand just now. In 2019 32 per cent of us saw a butterfly in our garden. By 2020 that was down to 21 percent. By 2021, that was down again, to just 16 per cent. Simple tips to rewild your garden: • Avoid chemical pesticides and herbicides, which also kill ‘good bugs’, butterflies and bees. • Tolerate as much mess as you can. Leave wood and leaf piles for hedgehogs and invertebrates. • Set aside some room where grass can grow longer, and wildflowers can bloom. • Don’t pull up all your weeds – they can be a critical source of pollen for bees. 25

FROM THE EDITOR Hope you all had a good Easter, did you eat too many Eggs and how did you do during Lent? Me, I made it to the end of Lent and on Easter Sunday I had my first cup of tea, did I enjoy it? Not quite as I was hoping, its taken a couple of days to enjoy the flavour again. So here we are into May, time is rolling by once again, why does it seem to go so quickly? This month we are having our Spring Fayre, so please we are asking for volunteers to help out in various ways. Can you help set up, help out on a stall, clear away after the event, donate home baked cakes, nearly new toys, books, raffle and tombola prizes and if you have potting plants that you can spare we would welcome them as well as other items. Plants can be brought along on the day of the Fayre. So hope you can help, please speak to one of the wardens or Lizzie. Deadline for the June issue will be Sunday 8th May.
